European Training Network for Animation schools

From 2006 to 2014 and with the support of the MEDIA Programme of the European Union, CARTOON organised the Training for Trainers meeting, which was specifically designed for directors of European animation schools and universities. Its aim was to strengthen and develop the network between schools so that they could exchange on best practices, their curricula and the increase of their students’ mobility. Another key objective of this meeting was to foster the dialogue between schools and the profession and in particular to inform schools of the skills needed by the animation industry at large.

Thanks to this meeting, the European Training Network for Animation schools, ETNA, was created. Below you will find the list of animation schools and universities currently part of ETNA.

The requirements for animation schools and universities to join ETNA are as follows:

  • primarily animation or related courses
  • public or privately funded school
  • university-level degree
  • European-based / Member of Creative Europe/ MEDIA programme

Cartoon does not organise the ETNA meeting of schools every year as we used to and have replaced this 'Training for Trainers’ event with a more focused event on young talents, and graduates from animation schools. It is called Cartoon Springboard. It allows young talents from European animation schools to come and pitch an animation project to a panel of experts who provide in return professional feedback to help these projects mature for the market.

If your school meets the requirements and you would like to join the network, please send your request by e-mail to
